Legacy Comps: £1 million in prizes in four years
As they celebrate four years in existence, Jed McCabe of Legacy Comps talks about Tony Fitzpatrick’s vision and the ethos that has led them to give away over a £1 million in prizes
By now, you’ve all seen the billboards, the TV adverts or even encountered the yellow van emblazoned with its logo that’s routinely seen driving around Renfrewshire. Over the course of their four years in existence, Legacy Comps have gone from an ambitious, philanthropically-minded new creation to a cornerstone of our local community.
Led by a tight-knit squad of contributors that have made connections and inroads into every avenue of the region, Jed McCabe speaks fondly of those early days when he was contacted by a local sporting icon and asked to embark on a journey that would help contribute to the lives of the people of Renfrewshire.
“It’s been an absolute whirlwind journey,” he reflects. “When Tony Fitzpatrick left St Mirren as CEO, he wanted to give back to the community that had been so good to him. It’s literally in the name that he wanted to leave a legacy, but Tony and the team never envisaged how much it would grow.
“Tony got in touch with me and asked me to be the guest presenter and that’s where it all started. From there, Martin McKillop, who is one of our directors, was the creative genius behind the scenes while our producer Sean Gill took charge of the television set-up.”

Once the team was assembled, things snowballed and the community soon realised this was something they could not only place their faith in, but could actively play their part in giving back.
“It was tough at the beginning. It’s an industry that’s driven on trust and I think that’s what we are achieving across TrustPilot and our Facebook reviews.
“This has been highlighted with over 900 combined five-star reviews, many of them confirming that when someone wins, they receive their prize instantly.
“One of Tony’s main objectives is to help sports clubs, charities and general good causes,” Jed continues. “That will never change. Among our main charities is Rays of Hope Cancer Support Centre in Elderslie, an organisation that Tony is an ambassador for.

“Recently, with a huge team effort and the community’s support we were in a position to gift them £10,000 pounds to help with their big build project, while also helping run events in support of Accord and St Vincent’s Hospice plus many more good causes.
“Part of how we give back,” Jed elaborates, “if you are a sports club or community organisation you can join our affiliation program where you receive a unique code.
“This means that when someone buys a ticket using it, their organisation will get a 20% commission which they can cash in for whatever they are in need of.
“Recently, St David’s Primary School took the kids to Edinburgh Zoo, while the West of Scotland Darts Academy that features the young sensation Mitchell Lawrie [who is the youngest player to compete in a senior WDF World Championship] cashed in their funds to purchase everyone in the team new shirts.

“That’s a huge part of how we give back and up until now, we’ve given out well over £100,000 to everyone from Ferguslie Pensioners to Johnstone Castle Community.
“At the end of the day, it’s all a team effort and it involves working in conjunction with a lot of people and many local businesses. I can’t emphasise that enough!”
Jed continues, “It started with a conversation over a cup of coffee and has evolved into us to giving away over a million in prizes and counting.”
Complete with a West College Scotland-designed logo that was inspired by a dream Tony had as he wanted to give from the heart and bring sunshine into people’s lives, the optimistic and kind-hearted imagery that you see associated with the company is exactly what they are delivering to the community.
This provides Team Legacy Comps a lot of satisfaction, but they are mindful that to some people out there, it might be an even more vital sense of comfort and camaraderie.
“That’ll always be our main objective,” Jed affirms. “We’re bringing people together, that was Tony’s goal and it’s something you can’t put a price on.”
