Andersons Jewellery Workshop Renfrew moves to bigger premises

Generations have entrusted their valuables to Andersons Jewellery Workshop and courtesy of their brand new premises, they’re now capable of doing more for their customers than ever

Some people sneer at the idea of sentimental value being encased in an object.

However, for those of us who’ve ever had earrings that are family heirlooms bestowed upon us, been given a necklace or bracelet by a cherished relative or got fitted with a wedding ring, we know that these material possessions are precious in ways we can’t fathom.

Over the course of their 35+ years on Renfrew’s High Street, Andersons Jewellery Workshop has taken pride in being the custodians and merchants of these beloved creations.

A tight knit family-run business from the outset, they are best known for their beautifully rendered bespoke work, created on-site by their peerless team of jewellers and goldsmiths

Now, as they get accustomed to their new, larger premises, Abbi, daughter of owner Mariesha and grandchild of the original owners, spoke to Mill about their goals of carrying on that tradition of craftsmanship and customer care.

“I got involved about five years ago when I left school and my mum has been here for 30 years,” Abbi says of the familial roots in the industry.

“So, it’s nice to follow in her footsteps. The move at the beginning of the year to a bigger premises has been much better for us, but it was a big project.

“It was effectively a whole year from getting the keys that we actually got in as it was a full flip of what the space was before. It’s only a few doors down from where we were previously.

“It’s not only got a lot more space and stock for us, but it’s a lot more comfortable for customers to come in and sit to have a wee chat. It took a bit of getting used to, but it’s a lot better.

“Plus, if someone is coming into the store with sentimental jewellery and feel that they need some privacy, that’s something we can afford them so much easier than before.”

With Abbi growing up in and around the business, she enthuses about how she’s not only learned from her mother, but the three full-time goldsmiths who are in charge of all the repairs and manufacturing – two of whom have been working there for 17 years.

In terms of job satisfaction, Abbi believes that it comes in many forms, encapsulating both what they actually do on a daily basis at Andersons Jewellery Workshop and the varied reasons why people come to them.

“It’s always something different every day,” Abbi muses, “no two pieces are ever the same. It’s a big responsibility for people to put their trust in us to do the repair on something they cherish or to remodel or melt it down.

“It’s very rewarding once people get the end product and they’re so happy with it. When you know that it’s been another family member’s piece that they’ve used the gold, silver or gemstones from, it’s amazing to be able to see their reaction.

“There’s always multiple examples of this a week and some of them really stand out in your memory for years afterwards. We always try to help as much as possible if customers don’t know exactly what they want, so we’ll try to guide them.

“Everyone’s taste is different, so it’s nice to see what people go for, particularly because our goldsmiths all have their own specialities.

“I think another part of it is that people know everything is done in-house,” Abbi contends.

“With some other jewellers, things might get sent elsewhere but all the manufacturing is done on-site and that’s something that gives people a real sense of peace of mind.

“Plus, the added space means we’ve got a much bigger workshop with much more machinery and that was the main goal when we moved.”

Courtesy of the technological advancements that have come with the move including laser welding and engraving as well as a separate polishing room, the future of Andersons Jewellery Workshop looks glitteringly bright.

A one-stop shop for repairs, bespoke pieces and everything in-between, their 37 years in business has been built on a bedrock of strong customer service and excellent work.

“At the end of the day, trust is such a big thing and we are happy that our customers are willing to put theirs in what we do,” declares Abbi.

“There’s customers who have been coming here since it opened in 1989 and we’ve built relationships with so many of them, so that’s always amazing to see.”
