McAvoy’s at Burgh Bar Paisley dinner review

Suzanne Oswald visits McAvoy’s at Burgh Bar, a longtime Paisley haunt that’s revolutionised its food offerings to great fanfare

There’s something quietly reassuring about pub food – the kind that arrives warm, hearty and exactly as you hoped it would be. It’s not about reinvention or flair; it’s about comfort, consistency and that familiar feeling of being looked after on a plate.

Elevated Pub Classics

Nestled in the back of the Burgh Bar on Glasgow Road, McAvoy’s leans into that tradition with easy confidence.

It’s a place that knows what it’s about. Building a reputation for their elevated pub classics and generous, flavour-packed dishes, the kind that feel homely and instantly satisfying, rather than fussy.

With father and son Scott and Connor McAvoy at the helm, the pair launched their new menu back in May – broadening their offering to include a wide range of gluten-free options, as well as vegetarian and vegan choices. So that no one feels like an afterthought.

So, heading over on a quiet Wednesday night (before World Cup fever had taken hold of the pubs around Renfrewshire and beyond), my friend Lauren and I were instantly drawn in by the variety on offer.

Whether it’s a proper steak pie, a well-stacked burger, or a simple plate of fish and chips, all the homemade staples are there – and done right. This sense of care carried through to the friendly service.

From the moment we arrived, the team were warm and welcoming, giving us the impression that nothing was too much trouble.

The kind of hospitality that turns first visits into a steady stream of returning customers.

Of course, all of this would be for nothing if the food wasn’t up to scratch. But thankfully, no worries there.

For starters, we had king prawn tempura, which arrived plump and crispy with a tangy sweet chilli sauce and side salad.

And the pulled pork potato boat – a generously filled baked potato skin filled with smoky, tender bbq pulled pork that leaned fully into comfort.

After much narrowing down, I chose the chicken parmigiana for the main course and Lauren had the cajun chicken burger.

If anything could sum up the generosity of the kitchen, it would be my chicken – large, lightly fried in breadcrumbs, layered with lightly melted mozzarella cheese and a rich tomato sauce, and paired with spaghetti Napoli.

It was rustic and indulgent in all the right ways.

Lauren’s burger ticked all the boxes too – a light bun topped with salad, mayo and a generous portion of cajun-spiced chicken with a decent level of heat, alongside a hefty portion of chips and creamy coleslaw.

Both plates left the table empty.

Before simultaneously throwing in the towel, there was still room for a dessert.

For me, a nostalgic trip down memory lane for a sweet and warming apple crumble.

For the birthday girl Lauren, a decadent ice cream sundae, piled high with a vibrant array of ice cream, raspberry sauce and chunks of blondie.

Not a bad way to mark another year around the sun.

Suzanne’s Verdict

It was an appropriate end to a genuinely satisfying meal out. Because sometimes you don’t need small plates or trends or something fancy.

When you’ve got good, comforting, honest pub food (that’s also very reasonably priced) on your doorstep like this, you’re onto a winning formula.
