The Gift of Giving

A poem by Terry McTernan

It starts with time, a smile, a deed,
A moment spent to meet a need.
No fame, no fuss, no grand display,
Just hearts that choose to give each day.

A hand to hold, a task made light,
A friendly chat that feels just right.
For those who give, and those who gain,
Both walk away with lesser pain.

The ones who serve, they often find
A clearer path, a calmer mind.
A purpose shaped by acts of care,
A deeper bond that lingers there.

It’s not just what the helpers do,
It’s how they change the people too.
A lift in spirit, hope restored.
No act too small to be ignored.

In every hall, on every street,
Where neighbours talk and strangers meet,
Community is built this way.
By volunteers who light the way.

So, here’s to those who freely share
Their time, their talents, love, and care.
You change the world in ways you see.
And grow the best in both you and me.

Terry wrote this poem in his capacity as Volunteer Coordinator at the Tannahill Centre. It was written to form part of Volunteer Appreciation Evening as part of Volunteers’ Week 2025.
