When you hear that a company provides utility services, there is often a misconception that their goal is to line their own pockets at the expense of yours. 

However, the friendly, localised face provided by Renfrew-based Energy Saving Guru have already done a whole lot to destigmatise the industry simply by providing immense value to their customers. 

A two-pronged team led by Scott McCaw’s decades of experience and the customer-centric talents of Hilary Stewart, they already have no shortage of glowing testimonials and in Hilary’s opinion, this is just the beginning. 

“Scott has been in the industry for almost 40 years,” she revealed. “He began working with Scottish Power and all the big firms, so his knowledge is unbelievable. He’s the numbers guy and knows everything inside out, including when new rates come out. For me, the role is all about building our community face as we have no interest in being pushy or getting people in contracts that aren’t any good.

“We’re a small company and there’s no call centres, so we’ve become a kind of one-stop-shop for small businesses. Whether it’s SMEs or start-ups, we’re here to help. Rather than just talking on the phone, we often go out to the clients and do whatever we can to make things easy or take some of the responsibility off them. Basically, we’re here to help.” 

With Hilary brought in to build the sales and marketing side of the world of business, the team has hit the ground running and the company keeps growing by leaps and bounds. Unsurprisingly, that personalised touch is working wonders. 

“Just today, Scott was out seeing one of the biggest restaurateurs in Renfrewshire to ensure they’re getting most out of their utilities, but making people aware of what we do is a work in progress,” Hilary declared. I want to build trust and relationships with clients, because that allows Scott to focus on the numbers and ensure our customers are getting the best deals. 

“We’re looking to scale up over the next three to six months to cover all of Scotland and the UK, as we’ve already got a couple of big customers in the UK,” she continued. 

“When you phone us up, it’s either Scott or myself that answers the call, so you’re not getting anyone who isn’t knowledgeable about the business. That’s what we’re all about and just recently, we did a big local contract with St Vincent’s Hospice among others. 

“Above all, we just want people to know we’re here and that there are benefits to going local because we will go that extra mile or extra step.” 

Alongside the things that you might anticipate from a utilities company, Energy Saving Guru covers all bases of the business sector, ensuring that you can count on them to provide whatever you need.

“We do gas, electricity, water and commercial waste, plus mobile phones and SIM bundles. But, we also do things like credit card terminals. A lot of the time, people rent these machines and there are fees to go along with that, but we find deals to ensure that you can own them outright and get away from all that. 

“It’s all those utilities that no one really wants to deal with,” she affirms. We take note of the dates of when all these things end and send out new quotes without them even having to ask. In the case of mobile phones, we look across 30 networks to ensure they’re renewing with the best deal possible. 

With locally-born Scott as familiar with the area as the back of his hand, Energy Saving Guru pride themselves on being able to explain to anyone what is best for them and now, basing themselves in Renfrew is paying off. Not to mention that Hilary, who lives in West Kilbride, has found herself savouring her time in the area. 

“It’s a really good base to be in, but I was initially a little nervous as I didn’t know it all that well,” she reflects. However, I’ve come to love it. It’s very community focused with a strong feeling in these areas and you can tell that everyone wants to help everyone else. So, we just want to play whatever part that we can.”
