Kwang Tung Paisley dinner review by Suzanne Oswald
Suzanne Oswald pays a visit to the Kwang Tung Chinese restaurant – a fully fledged Paisley stalwart
Few would argue against the case that the Kwang Tung is a bonafide Paisley institution. In fact, it joins a select few restaurants around these parts that have truly stood the test of time, with decades of experience and an enduring influence that stretches well beyond its menu.
Under the stewardship of the Lee family, this popular establishment has been serving up authentic Chinese cuisine to locals for over 50 years – becoming a regular fixture for many and the definitive go-to for anyone looking for a reliable Saturday night takeaway, or a first-class meal out.
No strangers to the restaurant’s extensive takeaway offering, we were therefore delighted to be invited on a wet and windy Friday night to enjoy a rare sit-in meal – despite Storm Amy’s unwelcome attempts to curtail our plans.

Of course, one of the many benefits of making the journey out is that you get to meet the names and faces behind the food. And as soon as we entered the Kwang Tung, it was clear to see that its people are at the heart of its enduring appeal.
Everyone that came through the door was greeted with a warm attentiveness and familiarity, while seeing the camaraderie between the owners and those who have adopted the restaurant as part of their regular routine was great to witness. With their diners clearly at the heart of their ethos, it’s no surprise that they can rely on repeat business.
And for those few individuals who are perhaps not yet acquainted with this local favourite, you’ll find it on George Street – warm, welcoming and devoid of any pretentiousness.

A recent refurbishment split the restaurant in half, with a section now dedicated to its takeaway service, but it feels all the more cosy and intimate for it – with its long-standing Paisley roots proudly displayed in its decor.
As for the menu, it features everything you could want from a Chinese restaurant, with near endless options to choose from. Everything is covered – meat, chicken, fish, vegetarian, sweet, savoury, along with some great set menus that offer great value for money. With such a vast and varied offering, you could come here on a regular basis and pick something different every time.

On this occasion, I couldn’t see past some personal favourites. So, after dutifully polishing off the prawn crackers, I had the chicken satay starter, which included three skewers of chicken with a silky smooth peanut satay sauce while Gianluca went for the vegetarian spring rolls – a generous portion of crispy pastry packed with fresh veg and served with a sweet chilli dip.

For the main course, my sweet and sour chicken was served Peking style (pictured), with the chicken adorned in a light, crispy batter, and accompanied by an abundance of fresh peppers and onions. Served with a generous portion of rice, the star of the show was the sweet and sour sauce – sweet, tangy and deliciously moreish.

Meanwhile, Gianluca went for the vegetarian Singapore chow mein which he said had a brilliant spicy kick to it. Again, the freshness of the ingredients stood out as it came packed with mushrooms, peppers, onion and chillies – a combination that proved perfect for some warming curry sauce on the side. Not to forget the absolutely addictive salt and chilli chips we ordered to top this whole gluttonous feast off – which, despite our valiant efforts, came up the road with us for a late-night snack.
With its excellent service and expertly crafted food, it’s no surprise that the Kwang Tung has become such a cherished part of its community. Over 50 years on, its continued success is no fluke – so put it on your list next time you head out or even stay in for a takeaway. Just make sure you arrive with an empty stomach.
